Home Automation Systems Have Come A Long Way Since The Clapper

Remember The Clapper? Back when home automation systems were as sophisticated as this formula: Want light? “Clap On!” Ready for bed? “Clap Off!”

The Clapper, you were to be impressed to know, as well as being (gasp!) sound activated, also worked (well, assumedly still works) with any American standard electrical outlet.

It’s coming back to you, right? If you’re still a little foggy, this will make it all clear again:

Hollywood had a soft spot for The Clapper. Or shall I clarify, Hollywood comedies. Uncle Buck, Bruce Almighty, Garden State, Night At The Museum…for some reason, the clap on, clap off cause and effect lighting was perfect fodder for physical comedians.

Home automation systems are not as hilarious as they used to be. They’re less John Candy or Ben Stiller and more…well, no one knows the names of the lighting geniuses behind the scenes of movies. That’s kind of a shame. When you appreciate the subtleties of lighting as much as I do, it’s kind of unconscionable.

On the other hand, they’re so good partly because we don’t notice them. It’s a lot like the integrated and controlled lighting you get with a home automation system. Less funny, but still feels like magic. More like this…
